How a samurai classic explained Japanese ethics to the West

In 1899, Inazo Nitobe, born into a samurai family, published 'Bushido: The Soul of Japan' in English. A Belgian legal scholar had asked him how Japan taught morality without religious instruction in schools. Nitobe answered with samurai ethics, described through seven virtues from rectitude to loyalty.

The book gave Western readers a concrete framework for understanding Japanese values at a time of little cultural exchange. It shows that moral education can come from secular codes of conduct, not only religious teaching — a question still relevant to how societies teach character in schools today.

✦ Values can travel across cultures when one person explains them plainly.
