New math links particle physics puzzles across two theories

Researchers derived formulas describing how particles interact in a curved spacetime called AdS4. They extended earlier work on gluons to scalar fields, covering special 'self-dual' versions of two key theories: Yang-Mills (the math of the strong force) and gravity.

Physicists struggle to compute particle interactions in curved spacetime, where gravity meets quantum fields. These formulas show a shortcut: complicated answers can be built from simpler flat-space pieces. The 'double copy' trick even turns Yang-Mills results into gravity results, hinting at a deep hidden relationship between the two forces.

✦ Gravity and particle forces may be two translations of the same underlying math.
