Perovskite laser holds steady through 400 million pulses

Researchers at Vilnius University built perovskite laser structures that kept performing steadily through more than 400 million pulses. Writing in Advanced Optical Materials, the team tackled the biggest obstacle facing these semiconductors: a tendency to degrade that has held back practical use worldwide.

Perovskites are cheap, easy-to-make semiconductors with real promise for next-generation optical technology, but their instability kept them stuck in the lab. Demonstrating a laser that endures 400 million pulses shows the durability problem can be solved, clearing a key hurdle between promising material and working device.

✦ Perovskites were too fragile to last. This one survived 400 million laser pulses.
