Hybrid protein reduces drug-resistant infection in mice

Researchers built a fusion protein that combines bacteria-killing activity with control of harmful immune-cell movement. Early laboratory and mouse findings showed reduced carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, less inflammation, and improved survival in a mouse model of sepsis.

Carbapenem-resistant bacterial infections can leave few effective antibiotic options. This fusion protein targets two linked problems: it kills the bacteria while limiting neutrophil-driven inflammation. Mouse results show a possible treatment route for severe resistant infections, but the 24-hour safety check was preliminary and human benefit is unknown.

✦ The protein shows promise in mice; human safety and benefit are unproven.
