Migraine drug may disrupt a reflux-cancer nerve circuit

In a preprint study, researchers traced how bile reflux lets a mouth bacterium thrive where the esophagus meets the stomach. Bacterial signals there loop through nerves and lining cells, feeding early tumor growth — a circuit the approved migraine drug rimegepant disrupted.

Heartburn and reflux are common, but the step from irritation to cancer has been hard to see. This study maps one complete chain — microbe, nerve, cell — and shows a drug already on pharmacy shelves can break it, hinting migraine medicines could be repurposed for cancer prevention.

✦ A migraine drug might one day help stop reflux-driven cancer early.
