Researchers developed a laser method that vaporizes a thin polymer layer beneath each micro-LED, blasting the chip across the gap to its target. They moved chips as small as 35 micrometers with placement errors below one micrometer, picking individual chips on demand.
Micro-LED screens promise brighter, more efficient displays, but factories must first place millions of microscopic chips onto panels quickly and precisely. Today's transfer methods are slow and imprecise. This approach is fast, selective, and accurate, so it could make the trickiest manufacturing step practical for phones, TVs, and flexible devices.
✦ The hardest part of a great screen is placing millions of tiny lights exactly right.
