Large Biobank Study Finds Eight New Aortic Disease Genes

Researchers compared rare genetic variants in more than 10,000 people with thoracic aortic disease against 880,000 healthy controls across five biobanks. They pinpointed 14 risk genes with strong evidence, eight of them newly identified, expanding what is known about inherited risk.

Thoracic aortic aneurysms often grow without symptoms until the aorta tears, which is usually fatal unless repaired in time. Only part of inherited risk was known before. A fuller gene list could give doctors more targets for testing relatives, monitoring the aorta, and planning surgery before dissection happens.

✦ A ballooning aorta gives no warning. More known risk genes mean more chances to catch it early.
