Sanskrit scholar and former vice-chancellor Gopinath Mohapatra died late Friday in Bhubaneswar at age 92. He was a leading authority on Sanskrit literature and the Jagannath tradition, winning the Odisha Sahitya Akademi Award in 1990.
His Odia translations made classical Sanskrit works accessible to everyday readers, preserving texts many Odia families grew up with. His death marks the loss of a key voice in the state's literary and Jagannath scholarship.
